What exam preparation covers and where it gets lost

Published

The word preparation covers everything that happens before the patient walks into the room:

  • Fasting for a number of hours the centre defines.
  • Holding or continuing medication, as the treating physician indicates.
  • A prior diet lasting one or several days for some digestive procedures.
  • Drinking fluids or arriving with a full bladder for certain imaging studies.
  • Paperwork: the printed order, previous results, insurer authorisation.

Why does preparation get lost between the order and the appointment?

Because it does not travel with the appointment. The rule lives in a service document or on the personal cheat sheet of whoever books, and it is passed on by phone at the moment of booking. If the patient calls on a Tuesday and is seen three weeks later, the instruction has to survive three weeks in their memory.

The cost is paid at the front desk. The patient arrives, the preparation was not met, and the slot burns whole, because at that hour there is nobody left to offer it to. Rescheduling sends them to the back of the queue and a colonoscopy is weeks away again.
